7:22 AM, Diary Entry - 02
Place: Koramangala, Bengaluru.
The sun is bright, clear sky, fresh air, with a bit of cold breeze still making it’s way into the open apartment window. Warm sun rays light up Bangalore’s morning.
After a long night in the Friday evening, it’s a lazy morning for both Akash and Sahasra, they like to sleep until it’s almost noon during holidays, but today, they had other plans. They are sleeping like a pair of ducklings tucked in a fuzzy warm haystack out in a faraway countryside. Soundly.
Suddenly, Akash’s alarm goes off.
”Ah, shit. I forgot to turn this off!” he said, in a sleepy voice, he turns it off and kisses Sahasra on the ear and a small whisper goes out.
”Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking, unfortunately, we are going to crash land into Sahasra’s ass, please brace for impact.” he said, mocking her bulged buttocks, on the way she sleeps.
“hmm, very funny, Ash. Let me sleep some more, it’s so damn early!” she said, half asleep, eyes still closed and pulling the blanket over head.
“The blanket is calling me to come inside, oops, my hand is going out of control, it’s gonna crash into your ass, uh-oh!” he said while kissing her on the cheeks, moving his hand onto her buttocks, wobbling them.
”Ughhh!” she grunts, pinching hard on his waist, still eyes closed.
“Wake up, shorty. It’s a beautiful day outside, let’s cook some breakfast, and make some coffee!!” he said, energized.
“I would really love some coffee right now.” she said, looking at him, in a sleepy yet soothing voice.
”Let me go and make some.” he said, getting up from the bed.
”Please.” she said, not leaving the blanket.
Akash walks into the kitchen, opens up a glass jar full of coffee powder, labelled “From Coorg”, and starts making the coffee with just enough sugar. A thought gets into his mind.
”Maybe we should visit Coorg today?”
He pours the hot coffee into their mugs, custom printed, stickman figures of themselves, drawn by Sahasra.
“There you go” he said, giving her the mug.
”Thanks, Coffee tastes better when we sit on the balcony, isn’t it?” she said, moving into the balcony.
”Yes, my favourite part of the day is sipping coffee with you.” he said, glancing at her, watching the tree leaves rustle with the sunrays.
”And my favourite part of the day is seeing you brew coffee, with utmost care.” she said, watching the city skyscrapers.
”Uh-uh, stalker!” he said, surprised at her.
“Say, let’s go somewhere, it’s so fucking depressing seeing people going to their work on a Saturday! she said.
”I’ve almost forgot, let’s hit Coorg, we’ve both been together for an year, but couldn’t get the time to visit it.” he said, with a great excitement.
“You mean, YOU didn’t get the time? is that correct, Ash?” she said, pouting at him.
”Baby, you know the shit I’m in, our company is directly controlled by the Indian Air Force, we serve the intelligence they require. I’m happy that they atleast give me saturdays off!” he said, hoping for her to empathize.
“It’s not like I don’t understand, you work on Saturdays too, sitting with your laptop, barely spending time with me other than the nights, I too need my dopamine to work on my paintings!” she said with pursed lips, finishing her coffee.
“I know, I can’t redeem the time that’s lost, but I can promise the time that shall come soon, and I mean it. Shall I write “I’m sorry, sahasra” a hundred times?” he said.
”Nuh-uh!” she said, while being mad at him.
”I’ll cook your favorite mumbai styled pav bhaji, come on now!” he said.
”Nuh-uh!” again she said, moving her head sideways.
”Okay, hundred kisses then.” he said, giggling.
”umm.” she said, looking at him, annoyed yet blushed.
”Shall I count that as a yes? ” he said, taking her into his arms.
”Stop teasing me already, and let’s go to coorg, the sun is getting up, you can give my kisses on the car.” she said, in a shy tone.
”Yes! first let’s cook that pav bhaji.” he said.
”Hehehe” she smirked.
They both shared the cooking process, finally making Sahasra’s favourite dish. After eating the breakfast, and freshing up. They both get in Akash’s black BMW.
”All set? hope you didn’t forget anything.” he said, sitting in the driver seat.
“I didn’t, you did. Where are my precious kisses? Half now, Half before we start our return!” she said, sitting beside the driver seat, leaning towards him.
”I’m glad that I installed remote black tinted covers for these windows.” he said, starting kissing her slowly and turning on the black tints for all the windows.
The basement is empty, just cars and bikes. No human in sight, as for Akash, kissing Sahasra felt like the energy he needed for the day. Unlike the usual French kiss, he focused only on gently touching her lips with his, as if he’s subconsciously showing his gentle demeanor to her.
“Say something, god. It’s so awkward if you stay silent!” he said, stopping in the middle, looking at her in the eyes.
”ummmm, leave it, you’re kissing like you don’t want to touch my tongue, such a cold kiss.” she said, baffled at his non French kisses.
”I wanted to see how you will react, let’s save the fun part for Coorg.” he said, laughing at her baby face.
”Ugh, Dumb ass!” she said.
They start the ride to Coorg, around 10:08 AM. Blasting music, playing ‘Mental Manadhil’ from O kadhal kanmani. Suddenly, black clouds cover the highway, not a surprise for both of them. There seems to be a thunderstorm brewing, lightning and drizzling has started.
“Ash, why is the weather so romantic today?” she said, looking at the dark sky.
”I don’t know, maybe because you decided to put your head on the sunroof?” he said, looking at the road.
“No, because it’s raining, dummy.” she said, getting her head wet from the soft rain drizzle.
”That joke is so unfunny that I’m having the urge to stop the car and sit on the grass fields until it goes out of my head.” he said, cringing at her joke.
”Pull over, I’ll come down.” she said.
”I wouldn’t mind being wet, but you’ll catch a cold, baby.” he said, slowing down the car.
”I’d be more glad, then I’d have you by my side all the time, caressing me from morning to night.” she said, pulling her hair band and letting her hair down.
“I don’t like seeing you sick, so we’ll only stay a bit.” he said.
The car is at a halt beside the highway, hazard lights on, they both came out of the car, the rain is soft, slowly pouring gracefully just like snow. She leans on the BMW logo, with Akash holding her face with his hand and looking into her eyes.
“So, did the joke come out of your ears?” she said.
”It didn’t, but echoing. You look gorgeous with your hair down.” he said, leaning towards her.
”Oh, do I? prove it.” she said, smirking.
”Why don’t you wait until dusk, I’ll show you in detail.” he said, covering her face from the rain droplets with his posture.
”I’ll wait then - lets go inside, achooo!” she said, sneezing.
They both get back inside the car. Back seats. Hazard lights still on. Windows blinded by fog due to the warmth inside.
“I told you, god. I should’ve never stopped. Come here, I’ll dry your hair quickly, thankfully we bought towels and extra clothes.” he said, drying her hair, gently.
“Hehe, If you didn’t, I would’ve missed you drying my hair, how cute.” she said, changing into a fresh pair of a sweatshirt and trousers.
”I’m hoping that you don’t catch a cold.” he said, wiping droplets off her face.
”Ash, You look drenched, achooo! my turn now, close your eyes and lean on to me!” she said, taking the towel into her hands.
”It’s really fine, I got it!” he said, trying to take back the towel from her hand.
“You always ‘got it’, I’m aware of your awesome capabilities, I will still do it, with or without your permission.” she said, stealing the towel from his hand by force, drying his hair and pulling his cheeks hard.
Akash stays silent, out of words on what to express or to say. But for Sahasra, she heard it all. In his silence.
“Now, change fast Mr. Romeo, we need to make it Coorg before it gets dark, I’ll drive.” she said, shifting into the driver seat.
“Go ahead. Careful, the roads are slippery.”
he said, shifting to the front seat.
They both started the journey again, blasting music, enjoying the scenic view of Coorg outskirts and making it to their prebooked treehouse hotel stay. They have arrived at 4 PM, the same day.
“Damn, the trees are bigger than I’ve thought, and the view is awesome.” he said, looking at the trees covering the hotel.
”Ugh, I’m so hungry, gonna die of hunger. Eat leaves if you like trees.” she said, sitting on their bed.
”First, I’m dying to see those Iruppu and abbey waterfalls, let’s eat fast and cover them!” he said, laying on their soft bed, face covered in the bedsheet.
”eh, they are boring normal tourist places, we’ll first go to a hidden spot that I know, let’s go out and eat something first.” she said.
They both enter a local restaurant that serves a regional fish delicacy, pan fried with spicy masalas, paired with rice. After eating the food, they get back to the treehouse.
Time: 6 PM, Treehouse Hotel, Madikeri
“Gear up, we got an adventure!” she said, excited.
”The best I can do is, this.” he said, handing out a torchlight and a hoodie.
”Ugh, fine. Follow me.” she said, venturing out of the hotel.
”Madam, please refrain from going too deep inside the woods, it’s already lights out everywhere, it’s really pitch dark, no street lights at all, there would be no reception for cellphone too.” said the watchman, seeing the couple moving out.
“It’s fine uncle, I’m older than this guy, I know how to babysit him!” she said, reassuring and winking at Akash.
“Uh, are you sure this is necessary? why is this hidden spot deep in the woods? I’m hearing weird sounds already.” he said, looking at the tall trees.
”Jesus, Ash. we’ve barely walked 5 minutes, such a chicken, hold the flash properly, I got this, trust me.” she said, clearing out the path and moving deeper.
They ventured deep into the woods, from that moment, there’s no pavement to follow, showcasing that this route hadn’t been explored at all. Slow rustling of the leaves create an echo on the path. They are doing exactly the opposite of what the old watchman told them. As each second ticks, tension builds. Night light illuminates the tall trees.
“Fuck, it’s really dark, except our torch, I don’t see a single light source. I really hope that spot is near now.” he said, walking on the uneven ground.
”Yes, we’re close now. About 5 more minutes.” she said.
”If he knew that I was taking him to a place that I don’t know myself, he’ll go nuts, these markings on the trees, they seem to be human-made, why would anyone bother to come this deep for markings?” she said to herself, looking at her surroundings.
They both reach a peak point, the woods have been cleared out and the valley is deep and high.
“Hey, I see a dim glow of light over there, do you see it?” he said, looking over a faraway jungle.
“Yeah, Surprising. There’s no village or any resort from this point onwards, might be a forest office checkpoint, what do you think?” she said, looking closely into the light.
”Here, one of my worthy purchases is this binoculars.” he said, handing her the binoculars.
”Let me see. Holy shit, I see people, wearing black clothes, atleast fifteen, the fuck are they doing at this hour?” she said, zooming on their activities.
”Give me once, uh, they seem to be doing something with that fire, creepy shit, I’m carrying a .45 ACP on my back, If they try to do anything funny, we’ll see.” he said, assuring her the safety.
“Carrying your buddy as usual huh? Just leave their crap, come here, lay on the grass here with me.” she said, moving to a higher ground with no trees, clear night sky.
”Coming! damn, look at how clear the stars are, ah, so beautiful, worth the hefty fifty minute walk to here.” he said, laying beside her.
They spend thirty minutes, stargazing, counting the stars under the green wrapped grass field, in each other’s arms. Warm.
“You know what they say, ‘moments gone, will never be back’, this will all be in our past once we get out of the jungle. Isn’t that amusing?” she said, holding his hand.
”I really don’t want that philosophy, baby. Right now, What I want is- your kisses.” he said.
”You never have to ask!” she said, leaning towards him to kiss.
”Fuck, fuck, fuck. Akash, I see something over there, they seem to be eyes, shit.” she said, scared, holding Akash.
”Hehehe, that’s just a wild deer, now, who’s the chicken?” he said, laughing at her.
”Uh, I was just checking your reaction time, If something jumps on me, you have to protect me, so.” she said, bluffing at him.
“Now, let’s move back?” he said.
”Yeah, I’m tired. Please carry me.” she said, climbing on his back.
”Ugh, such a cumbersome shorty.” he said, starting the return walk.
They both reached back to the hotel, safely.
They took a bath together and slept without doing anything else. Covered in the blanket, in each other’s warmth.
Unbeknownst to them was the people with the black clothes were a group of cult members, worshipping the evil spirits existing in the Coorg wilderness. One of them, have seen Akash’s light, and followed their trail secretly back to their hotel. He has reported the hotel’s information to their cult members.
